Introduction

‘Putting students at the heart of everything it does’, every young person in our care is known as an individual (Ofsted January 2010). Trentham High School is a mixed, non-denominational school situated on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent. The school was awarded Specialist Science Status and Healthy Schools Award (September 2009); becoming a Foundation School and then a Co-operative Trust in April 1st 2010. This ‘change in status’ helps us to continue to build strong links with our community and become a truly member driven organisation; preserving and developing our ethos for future generations. Our ‘co-operative’ members are the community: parents, staff, students, governors, local organisations and businesses. The Trustees of our school include Newcastle-under-Lyme College, the Co-operative College and Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form. We believe that Co-operative Trust status will develop our already successful school.’

STARS Programme

STARS squad & Reportes Academy-12.12.11The STARS programme is a Youth Sport Trust initiative that was started in the North Stoke School Sport Partnership in 2009; the South Stoke School Sport Partnership joined in 2010. There are currently 53 athletes in the City who are
in the squad. The programme offers all aspiring athletes a support network with opportunities to explore different aspects of elite performance. Workshops featuring inspirational Olympic stars such as Guin Batten (silver medallist in Sydney) have been organised along with educational visits to Loughborough and MMU. Local international athletes such as Emma Jackson (800m runner) have also added their support. To be a part of the squad an athlete must be performing at national standard and trains or competes up to 15 hours a week. A film was produced to promote the squad in general by showcasing some of the established STARS squad members and some of the new and younger squad members.
